Caring for indoor plants. A woman happily spraying her plants

If you’re beginning your plant parent journey, you’ve come to the right place! With so many popular house plants, deciding what plants to welcome into your home quickly gets overwhelming and confusing.

But don’t worry! Georgia Home Remodeling is here to guide you through choosing the perfect plants for the unique areas of your house. This blog will discuss why it is critical to put much thought into your plant purchases, especially if you’re a first-time house plant owner. Then, we will break it down into three categories of indoor conditions—High-humidity, Low-light, and brightly lit spaces.

After reading this helpful information, you’ll better understand what plants will work best for your home. And in turn, you’ll have much more success growing strong, healthy, and beautiful indoor plants!

Choose Your Indoor Popular House Plants Wisely

Suppose you have decided that you’d like to fill your home with vibrant and lively plants. What a great idea! House plants effortlessly bring spaces to life and lend a welcoming feeling to the atmosphere. In fact, studies show that indoor plants improve your mental health!

However, if you thought you would grab the keys, run to the nearest plant nursery, and pick out the prettiest plants, you should reconsider your plan. Yes. You certainly want some lovely greenery, but there’s so much more to it than that.

You’ll need to be a lot more strategic when adding greenery to your home. It is essential to pick the right plants based on their needs and where you will place them. Otherwise, you may end up with unhealthy and welting plants. Let’s be honest—No plants are better than a house full of dead ones.

You must choose your new indoor plants strategically. Some of the most vital factors to consider are the particular spaces you want to fill and the unique needs of the plants. Once you have decided where your stunning house plants will sit, you can choose the plants that will thrive best in those spots.

An excellent example is picking out a small potted plant to add to your bathroom décor. This room tends to be more humid and often receives significantly less sunlight than other home areas. In that case, search for an indoor plant that successfully grows in high humidity and lower light conditions.

Below are three general categories of conditions and care needs for indoor plants. Each section will provide two popular house plants that work well for the category.

1 | Humid Environments

Ideally, your home’s humidity levels should reach no higher than 50% or 60%. However, several spots in a house tend to be more humid based on how they are used. If you want to add house plants to these spaces, look for plants that thrive in moist environments.

High Humidity Locations in the Home:

  • Kitchen
  • Laundry room
  • Bathroom
  • Basement (with grow lights)
  • Second-floor rooms

Bird’s Nest Fern, Asplenium Nidus

The Bird’s Nest Fern has soft and wavy leaves and is one of the most popular house plants in the bathroom. It works well in any humid space because it is an epiphyte, meaning it grows on other plants and receives nutrients from the air and the host plant. These plants are native to the tropical regions of the world, where the humidity levels are high.

Even better, the Bird’s Nest Fern prefers shaded spots, which is why it does so well in a bathroom or laundry room with small windows and little sunlight.

Spider Plant, Chlorophytum Comosum

The Spider Plant is bold and bright with long, slender leaves that burst from the center, almost like a firework. Most have a pale green stripe that runs down the center of each leaf, making their appearance even more unique.

Spider Plants are beautiful additions to bathrooms and other humid home spaces. Additionally, it adapts well to low-light conditions. If you set the plant in a spot with intense natural light, it may not survive. So, it’s ideal for rooms with higher humidity and softer light.

2 | Low Light Spaces

While all plants require some light to grow, several species prefer low-light environments. The popular house plants in this category will likely wilt when bright sunlight scorches their leaves and flowers.

Low-light Indoor Areas:

  • Hallways
  • Bedrooms
  • Bathroom
  • Basement (with soft grow lights)
  • Apartments with limited windows

Prayer Plant, Maranta Leuconeura

Like with most species, there are several varieties of Prayer Plants. Some are decorated in pinkish-purple stripes, and others have a stunning contrast of dark and light green. If you want to add character and interest to a room, the Prayer Plant might be perfect!

These plants are considered easy to care for and grow well in low-light areas of the home. However, they do not like the cold. So, this may not be an ideal plant for your home if you like to crank the AC down into the low 60s.

Cast Iron Plant, Aspidistra Elatior

Cast Iron plants have deep green and glossy leaves. They like low-light rooms so much that they’re also called “bar room” plants! They are great for those who are new to the plant parenting world. Watch out for bright sunlight, though. Their leaves are easily damaged with too much exposure to the sun.

3 | Popular House Plants for Rooms with Bright Sunlight

House plants in rooms with many windows and bright natural light also require special care. It’s easy to assume that these spaces will always produce happy and healthy plants, but this isn’t the case. Let’s explore the house plants that flourish in rooms flooded with vibrant natural light.

Spots with Intense Sun Exposure:

  • Living rooms
  • Windowsills
  • South-east or south-west corner of your home
  • Sunrooms

Ponytail Palm, Beaucarnea Recurvata

Ponytail Palms look just as they sound—a hefty yet small trunk is topped with a burst of long and narrow leaves, like a spirited ponytail hairstyle! They shine best when located in a brightly lit room. Ponytail plants also require less watering than other popular house plants because the chunky trunks store water.

Jade, Crassula Ovata

Jades are succulents that typically need more watering than their relatives. However, they still enjoy being exposed to plenty of sunlight. While ponytail pants can stand the intense sun, Jades require more filtering. They will thrive in rooms with lots of natural light but need to be placed in a spot that receives more indirect and softer light. People love to perk up their drab office desks with Jade plants.
