Want a quick change to create a peaceful retreat in your master or guest bedroom? Consider using paint to reinvent a room and switch up the mood in a room with soothing colors.
The Psychology of Color: Choose the Right Shade
HGTV explains “You can use a palette of neutral shades to create a look that leaves room for pops of color in your bed linens, pillows, lamps and other accessories. A neutral palette also works well because you can change out your accessories to suit your mood or to decorate for the season.
If you want more color on your bedroom walls, let your passions be your guide. Love green? Green is one of the best colors for bedrooms, because it has elements of both warm and cool, and there is a wide range of tints from which to choose. With green, you can furnish your room in a modern, traditional or eclectic style. It looks great with pops of complementary colors and furniture that is either painted or bare wood.
If red is your favorite color, you can use it in the bedroom, but use caution. Red stimulates, and too much of it can be overwhelming. Choose a muted tint, or try using red on just one wall, either behind your headboard or on a wall that has large windows, to break up the intense color. Be careful about using bare wood furniture in a room with pure red walls, as the two can clash. Better to go with painted pieces.
The tips for red also hold true for yellow. Softer shades will be more relaxing, and you don’t want to go with too bright a shade in the bedroom.
Cool and soothing blues are a natural for the bedroom. In traditional bedrooms, deeper shades of blue create a stately backdrop for antiques and classic furnishings, as well as artwork. There are plenty of muted and pale tones of blue that create a soft look for those who don’t want a dark color on their walls.
Even black can work in your master bedroom, but be sure to balance it with white furnishings, and add color with bright touches such as yellow or turquoise”.
Recharge any bedroom
Recharge any bedroom with these eye-opening makeover ideas from Sherwin-Williams:
Get some green energy
Aloe, gerbera daisies and peace lilies add color and texture to your space. A soothing green hue on bedroom walls reinforces the holistic beauty of your blooms. A neutral white or off-white pairs well on the other walls to help widen the space and create a tranquil and sophisticated feel.
Aim high
Change the mood in a bedroom by repainting the ceiling: vibrant stripes for a cheerful toddler’s bedroom, cool blue for a soothing guest retreat, or a dark brown or gray to suggest depth in a master bedroom.
Make the gradient
The gradient or “ombré” effect starts by painting the base of the walls one color, the ceiling another color and using colors in between to create a seamless look. With the gradient effect, a bedroom wall becomes a conversation piece. What’s more, you’ll have many color options to coordinate furniture and bedding. See how you can paint your own ombré accent wall.
Get the picture
Make a gallery wall in a guest bedroom to display framed photos of memorable vacations or some of your favorite prints. A matte-black wall makes a great backdrop for your photos. You can also pull out a hue from colorful artwork and use it for the gallery wall. This charming detail makes guests feel right at home.
Four-wall accent color
Painting a single wall a bold accent color different from the other walls in a room was a popular design move over the last few years. Now, homeowners aren’t holding back, and they are more likely to paint all the walls—including the trim and molding—one solid color.
