Function
Before you get started, think through the function of the space. How are you going to use it? What will you need in the space? Do a floorplan and fit all the pieces, etc.
Form
Next you can dream up the form with a color scheme. Make sure that it coordinates well with the inside of the house for a smooth transition and uniformity.
Remove walls
Consider removing walls in the back of the house and add fully retractable doors which can create ideal indoor outdoor living immediately. This adds instant indoor outdoor living.
Cozy corners
Set up a wall with a wood privacy screen that will allow light in but allow a quiet place to hang out. Then add hanging lights, plants, outdoor rug, etc. to develop a personality in the space.
Make the space your own
Look around and see where you can pull in pieces that will speak your language of design. Make a trellis with your favorite flowering plants, add lighting, consider overhead pendants, have a throw blanket on an outdoor couch, etc. Pull in a bench for extra seating.
Screened in porch
By adding a screen in porch, you can keep the bugs, pests and rain out while still giving you all of the elements of warm weather that you enjoy. It will not give you extra square footage to the appraisal value but it will increase the interest because most people love a screened in porch done right.
Dining space
Create a beautiful dining area with a table, rug, lights, chairs, umbrellas, etc. to have a delicious meal with family and friends for special occasions or just because.
Firepit
A firepit is perfect for the cooler nights to wind down and relax in your indoor outdoor environment. Add comfortable seating around the firepit so a group of people can enjoy this space.
