You’ve decided to create a Man Cave with a huge TV or projector system before football season. Or, your family collectively want an Entertainment / Media Room to hang out in this year. The first step to take is to talk with an experienced home remodeling contractor. Together you will determine:
- Which room in the house is best to use for your goals
- Floorplan layout of the room
- Décor design,
- Cabinetry
- Lighting
- Furniture selection and placement
- and the most critical question, where to put the perfect TV in the room for maximum viewing
Possible Issues
There are a few possible issues to think about in advance:
- Positioning a TV correctly for viewing and to reduce neck pain
- Fireplace, mantle, and TV configurations? Will the gas or wood burning affect the TV and components?
Considerations
Before you get started, make sure you discuss these considerations before purchasing items for the room.
Load Bearing Wall?
If you are mounting a television, can your wall hold it? Is it a load bearing wall that can support the weight of your TV long term? Are there studs in the wall?
Mounting above a fireplace?
Even though it might seem like a great idea, you’ll want to plan out the use of putting your TV above a fireplace. Is the fireplace gas or wood burning. Is there a mantle strong enough to stop the heat. Do you use the fireplace? What does your TV manufacturer recommend hanging your TV over a fireplace?
Where will the components go?
Where are you going to house your components such as game consoles, cable boxes, DVR, cords, modem, etc? Bookshelves, console, or a floating shelving unit can house the components neatly and hidden if doors are placed on the front area.
How will you conceal the cords?
Discuss how you will hide the trail of cords or if you can add an electrical outlet behind the TV, or in the media center, etc. You can hide them inside the way, purchased a cord cover, or install a power outlet.
Tools
Do you have the tools needed to mount your TV on a wall? For starters, you’ll need a stud finder, drill, a drill bit that is around the same size as the mount screws and a screwdriver bit. Or hire a contractor to do it correctly without any issues.
Are the ports accessible?
Where are the ports on your television?
Viewing angle?
The viewing angle is essential while mounting your TV. Can you angle your TV in the direction you are in the room or while you are seated? Can you use an adjustable mount to address moving your screen so people can watch depending on where they are in the room?
Mounting Hardware
If you are using a wall mount, there are different types:
- Flush-mount
- Tilting brackets
- Full-motion brackets
